Hollywood Avenue Epsom
Bungalow Renovation

This early-1900s Epsom bungalow was cold, with single glazing and an ageing kitchen and ensuite. We restored timber windows, added double glazing and renewed both rooms, making the home warmer for its owner.

02 The project

A warmer home for the years ahead

The owner had lived in this Hollywood Avenue bungalow for many years and wanted to stay in Epsom through retirement. She loved the home and its location near her family, yet cold winters and ageing rooms made daily life less comfortable.

The kitchen had unstable cupboards and a 1950s oven. An awkward hallway pantry and a step between the kitchen and dining room added to the frustration. The small acrylic shower in the ensuite was also difficult to use.

The Renovation Team renewed the kitchen and ensuite, restored original timber joinery and fitted double glazing. Hidden timber rot and an unstable ensuite floor called for repairs before the finished rooms could take shape.

03 The transformation

A kitchen renewed for everyday life

Unstable cupboards, a 1950s oven and awkward circulation had made cooking frustrating. The finished kitchen pairs muted green cabinetry, white benchtops and lighter floors.

01 / Before

The ageing kitchen

The old kitchen had timber cabinetry, worn cupboards and an oven dating back to the 1950s. Cooking and moving between rooms had become difficult.

02 / After

An updated place to cook

Muted green cabinetry, white benchtops and timber-look flooring bring a calmer, more practical feel to the renewed kitchen.

04 Project challenge / Older bungalow

Older spaces, renewed with care

The under-stairs room shows one visible change in this older bungalow. The renovation also called for careful repairs to rotten window joinery and an unstable floor beneath the ensuite before those spaces could be finished.

01 / Project challenge

Preserving the original timber windows

The original joinery mattered to the homeowner. Removing the windows for double glazing revealed significant rot in the frames and surrounding timber, requiring substantial restoration before the windows could be refitted.

12 Hollywood Avenue bungalow FAQ

Questions about this Epsom renovation

These answers cover the original bungalow, its kitchen and ensuite, timber windows and hidden repairs described in the published case study.

Why did the owner renovate the bungalow?

She planned to remain in the Epsom home through retirement, but the cold single-glazed rooms, ageing kitchen and uncomfortable ensuite had become hard to live with.

What changed in the kitchen?

The team renewed the ageing kitchen. The original room had worn cupboards and a 1950s oven; the finished kitchen has muted green cabinetry, white benchtops and timber-look flooring.

Were the original timber windows retained?

The project sought to retain the original timber joinery where possible. The windows were restored and upgraded with double glazing before being refitted.

What hidden issues affected the windows?

Removing the windows revealed significant rot in parts of the frames and surrounding joinery. The team carried out substantial timber restoration before the glazing work was completed.

What was found beneath the ensuite floor?

Demolition revealed an unstable floor with insufficient posts and footings, plus an unusual concrete base. The team removed the unwanted concrete, added posts and repaired and levelled the floor.

How did the home become warmer?

Restored timber windows with double glazing made the bungalow much warmer, according to the case study. New drapes and blinds added another layer of comfort.
